🌅 Guide

Walks

squares, riverbanks, hills and smart choices

Florence is small until you wear the wrong shoes. The climbs to the Piazzale and San Miniato are beautiful, but they are climbs.

How to read it

0–10 min
when you want to go out without really deciding
10–25 min
when the city needs to open up a little
over 25 min
when you want to earn the view

0–10 min

around the corner

Piazza della Santissima Annunziata

loggias, proportions, calm

Piazza della Santissima Annunziata, Firenze

2–3 min walkfreeoutdoors

The square seems almost empty even when it isn't: Brunelleschi, porticoes, symmetry and that feeling of having found a corner of Florence all to yourself.

best time
early morning or soft light
route
Via degli Alfani → Santissima Annunziata → San Marco

host's note

Perfect as a decompression walk right after arriving: beautiful, short, nothing to prove.

Map

dawn

Il Duomo all'alba

the classic without the crowds

Piazza del Duomo, Firenze

5–6 min walkfreeoutdoors

The Duomo is obvious, but at dawn it changes category: fewer selfies, more stone, more city. It's the smart version of the most touristy place possible.

best time
before 8, really
route
Via dei Servi → Duomo → Bell Tower → Baptistery

host's note

If you go at 11 you've chosen washing-machine mode. If you go early, you've won.

Map

local

Sant'Ambrogio e Santa Croce

a lively neighbourhood, real squares

Piazza Sant'Ambrogio, Firenze

8–10 min walkfreeoutdoors

The market, bars, neighbourhood life, and then Santa Croce appearing without too much theatre. It's the historic centre, but with less of a postcard look.

best time
morning or late afternoon
route
Borgo Pinti → Sant'Ambrogio → Santa Croce

host's note

Great if you want to walk and then stop for a coffee or an aperitivo without changing area.

Map

10–25 min

sunset

Lungarno e Ponte alle Grazie

water, light, a slow pace

Ponte alle Grazie, Firenze

12–14 min walkfreeoutdoorsevening

The Arno puts the day in order. From Ponte alle Grazie you see Florence from the side, which is often the best way not to feel trapped inside a postcard.

best time
golden hour or after dinner
route
Santa Croce → Ponte alle Grazie → Ponte Vecchio

host's note

It's beautiful at sunset, but it works after dinner too: an easy walk, no climbing.

Map

Oltrarno

Oltrarno e Santo Spirito

artisans, a square, less posing

Piazza Santo Spirito, Firenze

18–20 min walkfreeoutdoors

Cross the Arno and Florence changes its voice: workshops, doorways, a lively square, people sitting with no plans. Touristy, yes, but with more real life.

best time
late afternoon
route
Ponte Vecchio → Via Santo Spirito → Piazza Santo Spirito

host's note

Don't rush. The fun is slipping into side streets and pretending you know exactly where you're going.

Map

off the beaten track

San Niccolò

a gentle climb, warm stone

Via di San Niccolò, Firenze

18–20 min walkfreeoutdoors

It's the street that prepares Florence for the hill: less monument, more atmosphere. Houses, steps, workshops and a climb that still feels civilised.

best time
afternoon, before sunset
route
Ponte alle Grazie → San Niccolò → Porta San Miniato

host's note

Good before the Rose Garden: it brings you to the view with a bit of suspense.

Map

over 25 min

view

Giardino delle Rose

a clever view below the Piazzale

Viale Giuseppe Poggi 2, Firenze

25–30 min walkfreeoutdoors

The view is almost the one from the Piazzale, but with more green and fewer buses. When the roses are in bloom, from April to June, it even feels like a refined choice.

best time
spring or sunset
route
San Niccolò → Rose Garden → Piazzale Michelangelo
hours
9 am to sunset, free entry

host's note

It closes at sunset; if it's closed, keep climbing towards the Piazzale anyway.

Map

high up

San Miniato al Monte

the climb that's worth it

Via delle Porte Sante 34, Firenze

35–40 min walkfreeoutdoors

The walk is a small moral test, but the arrival pays off: the façade, silence, Florence below you and the feeling of having done something more than the usual photo.

best time
sunset, with comfortable shoes
route
Piazzale Michelangelo → San Miniato al Monte

host's note

Don't rush it and don't expect a light stroll: it's beautiful precisely because it asks something of you.

Itineraries

Zero hassle

Piazza della Santissima Annunziata → Il Duomo all'alba

beautiful right away, little effort, maximum return.

Sideways Florence

Sant'Ambrogio e Santa Croce → Lungarno e Ponte alle Grazie

neighbourhood, square, water: everything stays human.

A view you earn

San Niccolò → Giardino delle Rose → San Miniato al Monte

you climb, you sweat a little, then you understand why.

Golden rule

The best walk in Florence isn't the longest: it's the one you take when the light is right and the city isn't pushing you yet.
